Etch vs Laser vs Faux?
Sand Carve Etching
Sand carve etching is the best quality method for branding glassware. An individual film mask/stencil is made, and hand applied to each glass, which is then “blasted” in a cabinet by a high-pressure stream of air and abrasive. The mask protects the glass areas that will remain clear, while the abrasive etches away a minute amount of glass from the surface of the glassware. The result is an elegant, detailed design with a subtle frosted white appearance.
Unlike other decorating methods, your sandblast etched brand/design will never wash, chip, or wear off. Etched glasses can be machine washed endless times.
Sandblast etching is Prop 65 compliant. Etching does not add any materials or chemicals to the glass, it cuts into the glass by way of compressed air and different types of medium. Also, because etching does not add glaze or inks to the item decoration does not need to be 22 mm outside the rim of drinkware.
Laser Etching
Laser etching involves using a laser beam to scratch or etch a design onto a surface. The results on glass and crystal are not as sharp or detailed as sandblast etching. Laser is a faster way to etch and best displayed on wood, metal and acrylic surfaces.
Faux Etch Screen Printing
Forcing ink through a high-tension mesh screen onto an object is the customization technique known as screen printing. The ink color used is called Faux Etch. It is a light gray giving the look of frosted or etched. This decorating method allows for the lowest cost on larger sized orders.
Screen Printing is durable but not permanent. Screen printed glassware will typically last for 50-100 cycles through a commercial dishwasher. However, heavy use or mechanical abrasion may eventually cause the ink to chip, fade or wear away. Inks used must be Prop 65 compliant and the decoration can not be less than 22 mm from the rim of drinkware.
